Mr. Dondero started his career in the financial industry by attending the University of Virginia’s McIntire School Of Commerce. James earned his Bachelor of Science Degree’s for both accounting and finances and moved on to work for JP Morgan Chase & Company in 1984 where he flourished with his financial training. Through his hasty success with JP Morgan Chase, James found himself in his dream position at American Express where he managed fixed-income funds in the sum of one billion dollars. In 1983, after several years of success working with various companies, James Dondero decided it was time to create his investment firm, and so Highland Capital Management opened its doors. James Dondero’s firm focused on multiple credit accounts, private equities, and hedge funds, however, James sets aside three million dollars a year for his philanthropic endeavors. Through his years of experience as a successful alternative credit manager and generous philanthropist, James began a business relationship with President and CEO of the Dallas Foundation, Mary Jalonick, who is known for helping organizations in Dallas as well. Together, Mary and James co-created the Highland Dallas Foundation, an establishment dedicated to assisting organizations in Northern Texas that intend to project their city into the future in a positive manner.
One example of what the organization looks to help is The Family Place in Dallas Texas. The Family Place is a shelter dedicated to giving men that are in an abusive household a place to find sanctuary and safety. With a twenty-four-hour crisis hotline and close access to medical assistance, it’s no wonder that philanthropists like James Dondero support such a cause. Along with The Family Place, James Dondero’s organization has donated funds to the Perot Museum of Natural Science, George W. Bush Presidential Library, and Institute.
