Dr. Shafik Sachedina was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania in 1950. It was as a child that he first developed a passion for medicine and knew that his future lay in that direction.
By 1975 he had been trained and certified as a dental surgeon a Guy’s Hospital Medical and Dental School, University of London. He joined the staff of Sussex Healthcare where he eventually became the joint chairman. He has worked in a volunteer leadership capacity in the Ismaili community for many years. Throughout these years he has held a number of different high-level leadership positions. He has also lived and worked among the Ismaili community of Central Asia.
Among many other roles, in the past, he has served two consecutive terms as President of the Ismaili Council for the United Kingdom. He is the current Head of the Department of Jamati Institutions at the Secretariat of His Highness the Aga Khan at Aiglemont in France. In this position, Shafik Sachedina is responsible for coordinating the activities in the 16 UK Ismaili communities and for interfacing with the Aga Khan Development Network programs.
And throughout the years, Sachedina has continued his work for Sussex Health Care. Sussex is made up of a network of homes that care for the elderly and mentally infirm. It specializes in taking care of those afflicted by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Dr. Saad Saad is a retired medical doctor. His medical specialty was pediatric surgery and he operated on thousands of children over the years, ranging in age from newborns to kids in their late teens. He was noteworthy for always looking in improve upon the methods and techniques that were prevalent during the years in which worked. He holds a number of patents for surgical procedures and products that he invented. He worked for a number of years for Jersey Shore Medical Center. He retired in 2017 and is now enjoying his retirement in Eatontown, New Jersey.
Other area medical centers that Dr. Saad Saad performed pediatric surgeries at were the Long Branch campus of Monmouth Medical Center and Clara Maass Medical Center. He attended the Cairo University School of Medicine. He practiced in Egypt and Saudi Arabia before emigrating to the United States. He has also gone on medical missions to the West Bank and Jerusalem where he has performed complex surgeries for very poor children at no cost. He quickly became certified for general surgery and pediatric surgery by the American Board of Medical Specialties after moving to the US. He won a number of awards during his career including two in 2014. These were the Compassionate Doctor Recognition award the Patients’ Choice Award.
Doctors like Dr. Saad Saad use medical catheters during their surgeries. These are versatile tools which can be used for a number of different purposes. These are a tube which is either inserted into the body during a surgery or otherwise used to treat a medical condition. They can be used to drain fluids during a surgery or gases. Some are put in the patient temporarily while other surgeries call for them to be permanently inserted.
One issue with medical catheters is that doctors need to keep track of where they are in the patient’s body using X-rays. The problem is that while a few X-rays are ok having a bunch of them can be a big problem due to radiation exposure. In order to eliminate this issue, Dr. Saad Saad created an electronic device which eliminates the need for X-rays. His device detects the medical catheter like a metal detector would. Using Dr. Saad Saad’s device a doctor just sweeps the patient’s body and it detects exactly where the catheter is.
Even better, Dr. Saad Saad’s device is small so it is very practical for a doctor to carry one around in their pocket. His device isn’t yet in wide use but that may soon change. From there, she created her first digital store which began to consistently generate sales after only one year of operation.
While self-promoting professional using YouTube videos, she noticed that bold and vivid colored cosmetics were difficult to come by. That was because most of the makeup brands that dominate the market at that time were only producing neutral-toned makeup. Robert Ivy is presently the CEO of The American Institute of Architects. He has been in that position since 2011. Prior to that he was the Editor in Chief of Architectural Record. The AIA is a membership based professional organization. In the past their primary focus has been on the design and construction of buildings. However, since Ivy has taken the helm, their focus has broadened to how architecture can have a positive impact on overall public health.
Robert Ivy grew up in Columbus, Mississippi. He would go on to earn his BA in English from Sewane University in 1969 his Masters in Architecture from Tulane University in 1976. From 1996 to 2011 he served as Editor in Chief of the Architectural Record. During Ivy’s tenure at the Architectural Record earned many awards including the National Magazine award and many Jesse H. Neal Awards. In 2001 he authored a book on the biography of Fay Jones the architect. In 2010, Robert Ivy was named “Master Architect” by Alpha Rho Chi.
Since becoming CEO of the AIA, Robert Ivy has been very outspoken about the necessity of architects collaborating with other disciplines to promote public health and resiliency. In May of 2016 he wrote a blog titled Architects of Health for the Huffington Post. The article discusses how the architectural sector and public health sector can collaborate to fight the obesity epidemic in America. He cites how the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio had partnered up with an architecture firm to design a facility which encourages exercise to promote recovery. Ivy also cites how architects have teamed up with park planners in Manhattan to design the High Line.
In November of 2012, Robert Ivy did an interview with ZDNet in which he discusses how in the past architecture was mainly focused on “formalism”. Manaira is born

One sign that she may be starting to strike out on her own a bit more is a recent action she took in the wake of Trump informing her that he would be ending an Obama-led policy that gave transgender students the right to choose the bathroom they wished to use. Just hours before he planned to do so, the Secretary met with representatives of LGBT employees of the DOE to warn them.
It has been said that she informed them that she opposes the measure by the President, but she had no power to stop it. This comes as a surprise to some given that she publicly supported it during a recent speech. DeVos even went so far as to say the policy signed into effect by Obama was an overreach of federal powers.
Betsy DeVos has only been Secretary for a few months, so it stands to reason that she may develop a more headstrong presence within the cabinet over time. One thing is for certain, people from her home state know what she is capable of when it comes to fighting for what she wants. The question here is whether she will bring this personality trait to the White House or if she doesn’t feel it would be appropriate given her current position.
When a proposal to build a sports arena north of downtown Grand Rapids was made in 1991, Dick DeVos lobbied against the idea. He’d seen the problems building the Pontiac Silverdome caused in Detroit when both the Lions and Pistons left the city in the 1970s, and he didn’t want to see a repeat of that in Grand Rapids.
DeVos, who became the CEO of Amway in 1993, organized a campaign against the sports facility and formed a group of business leaders who called themselves Grand Action. Together, they became the motivating force that helped see the Van Andel Arena, the DeVos Place Convention Center, and the DeVos Performance Hall added to Grand Rapid’s skyline.
Dick and Betsy DeVos have used their family fortunes and positions in the business community to steer institutional change over the years. Their political support for the GOP has also helped bring changes to state laws in the areas of education and labor.
Close to $140 million has been given to programs for leadership training, arts and culture, health, churches, and policy initiatives by the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. One project in Grand Rapids that the Foundation helped make a reality was the contribution of $12.5 million towards the building of a children’s hospital named after Helen DeVos, who was Dick’s mother and wife of Amway’s co-founder Richard DeVos.
Education reform has also been a focus of the DeVos’s activism, supporting and founding charter schools that challenged the status quo in public schools. This included the founding of an aviation charter high school at Grand Rapids International Airport called the West Michigan Aviation Academy in 2010.
Dick DeVos, being a pilot, has taken an interest in reforming the aviation industry, playing a role in helping improve the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. He and a group of business leaders worked to bring more connecting routes to the airport from Grand Rapids, which lowered fares and increased passenger traffic.
He recently was named to the Management Advisory Board at the FAA and hopes to continue to drive reform and improvement in the nation’s aviation industry and infrastructure.
